Java Sparrow
9" x 12", watercolor, unframed, 2018
A small, plump finch with a very thick pink bill. The black head and white cheek patch are distinctive. Juveniles have a similar color pattern but are grayer. Often seen in flocks and can be found roosting communally in large trees at night. Native to Indonesia, where they are now very rare. Introduced widely across the globe including India, Philippines, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and the Hawaiian Islands. On the Hawaiian Islands, they are common in urban and suburban areas on all of the islands. Call consists of one or more musical chirps. Source: Merlin
